Brentford sealed their place in the second round of the FA Cup and a clash with Hinckley United with a penalty shoot-out success against Bristol City after the match had ended 1-1 after extra-time.
Andy Frampton had given the Bees a first-half lead before City's Paul Heffernan forced the match into 30 extra minutes.
In the shoot-out Lee Miller's spot-kick was saved and Leroy Lita blasted over the bar as the Robins lost 4-3 on penalties.
Brentford almost took the lead in the ninth minute when Isaiah Rankin headed against the near post from John Salako's right-wing cross.
Four minutes before half-time Frampton exchanged passes with Matt Harrold before firing a 20-yard left-footed drive past Steve Phillips.
Martin Allen's side deservedly led at the interval and they went close to making it 2-0 in the 58th minute when Sam Sodje headed against the top of the crossbar.
However, with 14 minutes left of normal time the Robins equalised when player-boss Brian Tinnion found Jamie Smith and he crossed for Paul Heffernan to score with a crisp volley.
There were to be no more goals in extra-time but it was Brentford's nerve that eventually prevailed in the shoot-out.
