It took the drama of a controversial golden goal extra-time winner to send Bristol City into the area quarter-finals of the LDV Vans Trophy.

Danny Coles headed a Brian Tinnion corner home in the 112th minute, a flag kick which Boston connections felt should have been a goal kick instead.

The incident settled a match that had produced plenty of free-flowing football with both sides enjoying positive spells.

Boston belied their standing and had the upper hand in the first 20 minutes with Tom Bennett and Alex Higgins both going close with headers.

But it was City who made the breakthrough with Scott Murray sliding the ball home from a Christian Roberts pass.

However, Boston drew level in the 43rd minute when Lee Thompson forced the ball in following a Mark Angel cross.

After the interval Bennett came close to scoring at both ends. First he saw a low shot held by Steve Phillips and then diverted a Tinnion free-kick against his own bar
