However, the 33-year-old came on as a substitute in the 2-0 Championship win at Scunthorpe and is close to making his first start.
"As soon as Louis is back, he's a more than deserving captain," Skuse told BBC Radio Bristol.
The 24-year-old was handed the armband by former City manager Steve Coppell and would welcome the chance to skipper the side in the future.
"I've absolutely loved it during the games I have been captain," added Skuse. "I've enjoyed every minute of it."
City will go into Tuesday night's home match against Watford buoyed by their first victory of the season at Scunthorpe.
"To get our first win at Scunthorpe, which is a tough place to go, was a massive relief. It was a big win, away from home, against a tough side."
