Johnson, who was dismissed for trying to retrieve the ball, said: "The lad was taking too long letting us have the ball back so I decided to help out.
"It's the first time I've been sent off for a good tackle. I was in the wrong but it does show my enthusiasm."
Johnson also fears striker Steve Brooker will miss the rest of the season after damaging his hamstring.
