The 24-year-old suffered the injury in training last week and missed the home victory over Derby.
"We won't know how bad it is until Liam has seen the specialist," said City boss Keith Millen. "He went over on the ankle in training and we thought we would refer him to a specialist as a precaution.
"It's the same ankle he had a problem with last season and we are not going to take any chances with him.
"There is no point panicking until we see what the scan throws up. Hopefully, it will reveal nothing too serious and Liam will be back playing sooner rather than later.
"We have our busiest spell of the season coming up over Christmas and new year and we want to have everyone available if possible."
