The Robins captain has been sidelined since suffering a fractured skull against Scunthorpe at the end of February.
The 34-year-old defender made his long-awaited comeback in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Yeovil this week.
He came through 90 minutes unscathed and, having proved his fitness, could come into contention at Bramall Lane. The Bank Holiday Monday fixture against Nottingham Forest at Ashton Gate is also an option for manager Keith Millen.
Although the friendly game was arranged primarily for Carey's benefit, Millen also took the opportunity to give fit-again striker Jon Stead and midfielder Cole Skuse much-needed run outs.
Both played for an hour before being substituted and will be in contention to start in south Yorkshire.
