The 22-year-old, who has signed a three-year deal, has brought to an end a six-year association with Bournemouth to make the step up to the Championship.
Pitman arrives with a terrific goalscoring record in the lower leagues. He netted 62 goals in 197 appearances for the Cherries, including a hat-trick in 16 minutes last weekend against a Peterborough side managed by former City boss Gary Johnson.
He could feature in a behind-closed-doors game against Aldershot on Tuesday before making his debut at Ipswich on Saturday.
